Out-breaking News...Can Search Activity Predict the Flu?
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Stand watch this winter against the Flu bug and stay healthy with the help of "vitamin G" - better known by its generic, meta-name -- vitamiin Google.
It's long been theorized that Google's search data could be useful in predicting epidemics. Now Google.org has released Flu Trends, an online reporting tool for flu-related search activity. As the "viral" message proclaims on the main page:
"We've found that certain search terms are good indicators of flu activity. Google Flu Trends uses aggregated Google search data to estimate flu activity in your state up to two weeks faster than traditional systems," This is the first time a tool like this has been released to the public.
The tool is part of Google.org's Predict & Prevent initiative. Data is available for download should you wish to conduct your own analysis.
If you want to check the status of other diseases (and build virtual antibodies), HealthMap offers an online "Global Disease Alert Map". The automated site uses a variety of sources including Google News, traveler reports, and official WHO alerts to track diseases across the world. It is another Google.org investment

Google Launches Video Chat for Gmail
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Google is rolling out video and voice capabilities for the chat function that is embedded in the Gmail interface. It's a bare-bones voice and video-conferencing service, but it's simple to install and use and is a very good addition to Gmail.
It's no Skype, though. Gmail Video and Voice, as it's called, can't connect to the plain phone network, as Skype's paid service can. And there are plenty of other optional features missing, like a voice call recorder.
Unlike many current video chat products, Gmail Video and Voice uses a proprietary plug-in, not Flash. The small (2MB) download supports Firefox, IE, and Chrome on the PC, and Firefox on the Mac. Support for other browsers and platforms (Linux and mobile) may come later.

Change.gov Transitions from Slogan to Website
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
How will President-elect Obama use his massive social media influence? A bit of an answer has already arrived online. The Obama transition team has launched Change.gov, outlining some of the President-elect’s agenda, and offering hints of what level of the transparency we might expect from his administration.
The site is currently asking users to share stories from election night. There’s also a “Submit Your Vision” section, where Obama asks “Where should we start together?”

Obama As Social Media Marketer
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Speaking of the winning presidential campaign, the Dems made all the right moves when it came to using online Search.
One of the most prevailing rumors spread via email was that Obama was a Muslim. Nothing wrong with that, except that it is inaccurate. So Obama's team put in place a paid search marketing campaign which appeared to be broad matching searches containing "Obama", "Barack", and "muslim."
In the sponsored search listings, two Obama ads ran unopposed. The first as more of a catch-all, titled "Researching Barack Obama?" and a second ad proclaimed simply, "Barack Obama: Not Muslim" linking to the brilliantly authoritative "Fight the Smears" site, which provided answers countering all of the misinformation which his team constantly updated.
How important was this site? Initial keyword volume research on Google shows an average of 226,616 searches per month pertaining to Obama and the word Muslim. Considering Google accounts for about 70 percent of search traffic now, overall monthly search traffic likely eclipsed 300,000. It would appear that the word of mouth and email campaigns on that subject raised quite a bit of interest. While we do not have access to clickthrough data from the paid search campaigns, Quantcast reported monthly traffic in October to the Fight the Smears website of 747,000 visitors.

MGM to Post Full-Length Films on YouTube
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Studios will kick off a partnership with YouTube by posting full-length action films like "Bulletproof Monk" and "The Magnificent Seven" on the Website along with clips from popular movies like "Legally Blonde." These will be free to watch, with ads running alongside the video.
The initial lineup may not be all that compelling, but for YouTube, which is owned by Google, the relationship with MGM is a crucial step in an essential reinvention. YouTube had its debut in 2005 and quickly became famous for the democratic sharing of bite-size video clips. Users love the site — 81 million people visited in September alone, according to Nielsen.

50 Simple Ways to Gain RSS Subscribers
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Own a blog, a feed, a newsletter or calendar ready to make the leap from flat file to syndicated RSS asset? As Paul Simon is famous for saying, "There must be 50 ways" to win subscribers!
Daily Blog Tips has compiled those 50 ways beginning with these Top 5:
1. Have a big RSS icon. Make sure the RSS icon is big and easily recognizable.
2. Display the RSS icon above the fold. Display your RSS icon here it can be seen -- onn the top half of your Web page.
3. Display the RSS icon on every page of your blog. A classic mistake is only putting the RSS icon on the homepage instead of every single page of the blog.
4. Use words. Depending on your audience, just using an RSS icon might not be effective. If they aren’t tech-savvy, they might not know what that little orange thing is. Create a small message explaining that subscribing will allow them to keep updated with your posts.
5. Post a subscribe invitation. If you want people to subscribe to your feed, ask them to! Write a post with them some compelling reasons and see how they respond.

Google Ad Planner Adds Features, Opens To Everyone
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Almost five months after its debut as an invite-only beta, Google Ad Planner is now available to all Google account holders and has a few new features, too.
Ad Planner is a tool that lets advertisers identify web sites that might be good places to advertise — even web sites that aren’t in Google’s advertiser network (i.e., AdSense). You can pick any web site and Ad Planner will return detailed demographics of its users, such as gender, age, education, household income, and more; it also reports what keywords are typically searched on the site, and other sites that its users tend to visit.
The new features announced this week include:
* Define your audience by keywords and geography — You can provide a keyword and see how popular it is in different geographic areas.
* Manage your site results — You can choose how your results will be displayed.
* Interactive bubble chart — This tool lets you analyze the demographics of your advertising plan in a more visual interface.
* International demographic data — Ad Planner audience data now includes France, Germany, Italy, Spain, and the UK.
