Google's Profit PIcture & Bringing Pay-per-View to YouTube
******************************************************

Google reported better-than-expected profitability for Q1, 2009. The results underline both the resilience of their business model and the ongoing potential of the Web as users and advertisers shift online.

Aggregate paid clicks, which include clicks related to ads served on Google sites and the sites of their AdSense partners, increased approximately 17 percent over the first quarter of 2008 and increased approximately 3 percent over the fourth quarter of 2008, the company said.

One question mark in the corporate portfolio has been YouTube, acquired for $1.65 billion in October of 2006. To date, YouTube has been a free, advertising-supported service, but Google plans to build payment mechanisms into its video-sharing site going forward.

"We do expect over time to see micropayments and other forms of subscription models coming" said Google Chief Executive Eric Schmidt just after the company reported first-quarter profits Thursday. "We'll be announcing additional things in that area literally very, very soon."

The change in tactics will mark a new era for Google's attempt to make money from YouTube. The service is tremendously popular, but also tremendously expensive to operate, and Google has been working hard for months to come up with a more successful financial formula for sharing video.

Shaping Social Policy: Voting Begins on Facebook Site
*************************************************

"Today, we take the next step in opening our site governance to everyone who uses Facebook with our first user vote," announced Facebook, founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg. "Through an application developed by Wildfire Promotion Builder, you can now vote on which documents you want to serve as the foundation for governing the Facebook site."

In this unprecedented, interactive exercise for modifying a site's end user terms and conditions, Facebook netizens were presented with two options: 1) the new Facebook Principles and Statement of Rights and Responsibilities (SRR), which incorporate feedback from users and experts received during the 30-day comment period, or 2) the current Terms of Use, which were developed by Facebook and did not go through an outside comment period.

Voting is open until 11:59 a.m. PDT on April 23, at which point the results will be reviewed by an independent auditor to ensure their accuracy. To vote, visit <http://apps.facebook.com/fbsitevote>

Google Site Links Now Showing (In One Line) for More than Just First Search Result
**************************************************************************

You may be familiar with sitelinks, the links that show up underneath the first search result and which lead to specific pages deeper within the site. Sitelinks enable users to jump directly to important parts of a site, which is often useful for large, complex websites. Sitelinks have the additional advantage of giving users an overview of a website's content by highlighting some of the popular parts of the site.

Until now, sitelinks have only ever appeared on the first search result, and so at most one site could have sitelinks per query. We're now launching an expansion of sitelinks: a single row of links can now appear for results that didn't show sitelinks before, even for results that aren't in the first position. This means multiple results on one query can now have sitelinks. Up to four sitelinks can show up right above the page URL,

If you would prefer not to have a particular sitelink show up, you can block a page from appearing as a sitelink for 90 days through Webmaster Tools

Excel-Lookalike Twitter Client Helps You Goof Off At Work
*******************************************************************

For a full-featured Twitter client, we like TweetDeck. But when working a desk job with an adverse "Twitter at Work" policy, we'd recommend Spreadtweet, the Twitter client that looks like you're hard at work crunching numbers.

The premise behind Spreadtweet is simple: The interface looks just like a Excel spreadsheet, and the casual passer-by will probably be fooled into thinking it's real, actual work. Even the "dock" icon is a dead ringer for Microsoft's (MSFT) Excel icon.

No word yet on whether Microsoft will take offense.

Get Adsense Focused on Your Content
*********************************************

A powerful step to improving your AdSense revenue that takes mere seconds to implement is at hand. First, understand that Google realizes that not every scrap of text on your site is relevant when they’re determining what Adsense ad to display. For that reason they offer a way to guide Adsense towards the actual content you want them to focus on.

If you use the following snippets of code around both your content and your ads, you will find your revenues increasing, sometimes dramatically.

SEO Organic Search Tip of the Week: Diagnosing Critical Website Architecture Issues
***************************************************************************

Stress tests seems to be a sign of the times for banks these days, so what stress points should you be looking at when trying to figure out if there’s a problem with your Website architecture?

Link Breaks and Sprains

Suspect internal link breakage? Download Xenu’s Link Sleuth and leave it to crawl your site. You'll get back a broken link report that will let you quickly identify whether your site has any internal broken links leading to 404 error pages. If you’ve got a really big site to crawl, Xenu can get a little overwhelmed. Try Web Link Validator for sites with more than 100,000 pages.

For checking inbound links that may be leading to a broken URL or a 404 error page, use Google Webmaster Tools to check out the pages with the built-in external links report. The report will give you a list of pages producing 404’s and the inbound links that lead to them.

Clearing Header Congestion

A “server header response”, like a 200 or a 404 is a status code defined by the HTTP/1.1 protocol. Giving the right messages when your page loads fully, is broken or if there’s a server problem is a vital part of the way your website communicates with search engine crawlers. Check every single response code you get by installing live http headers for Firefox and testing a few scenarios such as a broken URL and an ordinary page load. If anything looks wrong, talk to your developers!

Canonical redirects

Check to see if your site is indexed at http://yourdomain.com and http://www.yourdomain.com and set up a canonical 301 redirect to sort the problem out. Don’t forget to add a trailing slash at the end or the URLs (or remove it, depending on which you prefer). There are plenty of guides to setting these redirects up in IIS or Apache - here’s a nice guide from SEObook.com

Index Finger

One of the most suicidal moves to make in SEO is to allow your development site to get indexed. There are lots of ways to remove a website from a search engine index and usually we try to avoid that happening. Make sure you use a robots.txt file at the root of your development server and if at all possible, restrict traffic to the development site from outside of your network, perhaps by specifying IP ranges that are allowed or user agents that are not allowed in.
