Google Refines Search Results
****************************
Two significant improvements to the Google Search Engine Results page (SERP) debuted this week. The first is in the area of related search suggestions and the second in the size of the actual search result displayed on the results page.
Starting this week, Google will correlate search queries with related words and phrases to get at the most relevant meaning of a search query. A new section on the SERP will spotlight "Searches related to (the query term)" with alternate text links to help your clarify your search. As Google explains it:
"If you search for [principles of physics], our algorithms understand that "angular momentum," "special relativity," "big bang" and "quantum mechanic" are related terms that could help you find what you need."
Secondly, the search results will now feature longer "snippets," the part of the result underneath the Title, in order to provide additional information and greater context to the query term.
"User experience" continues to be the mantra that guides Google's search enhancements.

Hosting Companies to offer Google AdSense, Site Search Services
**********************************************************
You might want to start thinking of your Web hosting company as a new Google distributor or perhaps a factory outlet! Google has announced that it will work with hosting companies to offer AdSense, Site Search, AdWords for Search and Webmaster Tools for your hosted websites. This is great news if you love your Web host, and you want to simplify the process of monetizing your site and offering search to your users. Hosts can now integrate Google Services for Websites into their own control panels. You should start seeing them pop up soon.
As readers of this newsletter already know, Webmaster tools are useful for figuring out how to optimize your site for Google searches, and understanding what Google's bots see when they crawl your site. AdSense and AdWords let you buy ads in Google search results and sell ads for your site. There's no word from Google on which hosts will be adding these features, but if yours doesn't, you can point them to the URL below and suggest they sign up.

Wikirank: Track the Hot Trends on Wikipedia
******************************************
Wikirank does for Wikipedia what sites like Compete do for websites. It’s a nifty analytics tool that tracks trending topics on the world’s largest online encyclopedia, displays the 10 most read articles in the last 30 days, and gives users the ability to compare stats for up to four different topics.
Wikirank uses the actual usage data from Wikipedia servers to give visitors a better global or custom view of what’s happening across the information hub. Cooler features include the ability to graphically compare impressions on four different articles, embed graphs, view Wikipedia entries, and quickly search for related content on Google News, Twitter, or The New York Times.
We love the tool and can’t wait to use it to start comparing pop culture and Web trends, especially since Wikipedia has 10 million plus articles and is most likely one of the first places mainstream audiences go for information on the Web.

A Brief Guide to Mobile Search Optimization

Twitter Business Models Are Afoot
********************************
Speculation is once again running rampant as to how Twitter will make money. Earlier this week, the company threw its support behind ExecTweets, a mashup of sorts that aggregates Tweets from top executives that is sponsored by Microsoft and the brainchild of ad network Federated Media.
This week Twitter once again indicated that paid accounts are in the works, telling The Wall Street Journal that they are “watching the outside initiatives closely as it prepares to launch its own fee-based services this year.” Those outside initiatives include the likes of Glam Media’s integration of “filtered Tweets.” Developers of applications for Twitter are beginning to experiment with their own business models too.
Meanwhile, the Gartner Group released a report today that highlights the different ways that companies are adopting Twitter for business use. Although Twitter was originally intended for communication among individuals, a number of organizations have begun to actively participate on the platform. However, not all companies are using Twitter in the same way. Some are tweeting, some are just listening, and some really savvy companies are doing both.
Finally, a new service from AllTop, dubbed Tweet Top, now aggregates the top Twitterers in a particular subject category.
We (human) birds of a feather now truly tweet together!

SEO Organic Search Tip of the Week: IE8 and Silverlight 3, A New Wave of Microsurfing
*******************************************************************************
The final build of Internet Explorer 8 has been released in 25 languages.
IE8’s new features include Accelerators, Web Slices, and visual search suggestions, which improve how quickly users can get typical browsing tasks done.
Accelerators allows users to get—or pass on—information like a map or a definition by right clicking a word on a website and choosing a service from the drop down menu, without ever leaving the page. That means getting directions to the party, figuring out what your friend means when he says he’s an “aficionado,” or even sending something on the page to a friend via e-mail, all from the right click menu.
A Web Slice grabs specific information from a website (like the top stories from Digg or the weather forecast) and puts it in a drop-down menu, eliminating the need to browse to the actual website. ”
An improvement to the search box in the top right: users can get their answers without ever hitting enter, thanks to the drop-down menu that grabs information from the search engine without ever going to the site. The address bar also looks through favorites and history, and opening a new tab shows you a list of tabs you’ve closed recently, making it easier to find the site you visited earlier.
